RPS has deployed a custom-designed meteorological and oceanographic (metocean) measurement buoy for testing off the coast of Western Australia, adding sustainably-powered Floating Light Detection and Ranging (Floating LiDAR) to our industry-leading suite of metocean technologies.
Floating LiDAR is a modern measurement technique that uses laser light pulses to monitor and understand the speed at which particles in the air (water, dust etc) are moving, from a floating platform in the open ocean.
Designed by RPS’ Australian-based metocean science and technology team, a set of two new Floating LiDAR buoys has been manufactured locally in Perth by our manufacturing partner Ribuck Industries. Following the month long in-water test phase here in Australia, the buoys will be shipped northwards for long-term deployments off the coast of New York and in the North Sea (UK).
Powered by solar and wind generators and held in place by innovative, environmentally-friendly moorings, the buoys offer an emissions-free solution for long-term measurement programs for offshore energy, aviation, maritime safety, search and rescue and other projects.
The buoys will allow RPS and our clients to understand and measure wind speed and turbulence with high accuracy, far more cost-effectively than is possible with traditional wind measurement methods at sea. The data collected then can be combined with a range of other metocean measurement techniques to develop a reliable picture of open ocean conditions, even in dangerous and remote locations.
